Members of Virginia Task Force 2 return from Florida after assisting in Idalia response effort

Local first responders are back home after helping out in Florida to provide relief to those impacted by Hurricane Idalia.

Virginia Task Force 2 returned on Sunday, September 3, after 80 members of the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue team deployed to Orlando.

“Family and friends gathered today to welcome home members of VA Task Force 2 Urban Search and Rescue Team. Welcome home to everyone, especially SFR personnel Captain Medic Ray Willet, Medic FF Chris Cook and his partner Ridge!” said the Suffolk Department of Fire & Rescue on its Facebook page.

Others from the Hampton Roads area are also contributing to the response effort – the Virginia Beach-based group Operation Blessing is continuing its efforts to help those impacted. They have been in communities just north of Tampa serving lunches daily.

The organization is also helping repair damaged homes by giving people applications for free help. They have also provided emergency supplies to families in need, including food, water and cleaning supplies.
